Community Mentor

Mobile App

Role: UX Designer | UX Researcher

Project Goal: The goal is to create a responsive site and application that would allow users to quickly find mentors within a specific area.

Problem

There are multiple sites that offer mentorships, but many of them require high dollar payments and not enough of a personal connection.

Pain Points

COST

Many of the mentor sites require subscriptions that can be hundreds of dollars annually.

Impersonal

Many of the mentor sites don’t offer a personal experience or give the option for in-person meetings.

Communication

There are no mentors for all career fields. Most mentorships provided are for the most common careers like technology.

Paper wireframes

In the initial wireframes, I wanted users to have the option of searching for mentors or becoming a mentor through the app. Using large buttons and bottom-screen navigation was key for me to include to make this more user-friendly.

Digital Wireframe

The digital wireframe was created and I felt confident that it was ready for user testing to see what we could improve with the product.

Usability Study

After the usability study, I learned

  1. It was confusing for users to have the option to become a mentor or search for mentors. Signing up to become a mentor would be something to complete on the responsive website.

  2. Users preferred a clear list of mentor matches rather than a map view of where mentors were in their area.

  3. They also wanted quicker access to their profile and favorite options, rather than digging to find them.

High-Fidelity Prototype

The high-fidelity prototype for the app is designed with a navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to access favorite tools to use such as INBOX, SAVED, and HELP. Here is the link for the prototype.
